In the May session of Hot Topics in Practice, Alexis Bates reviews recent maternal deaths in Washington State and considers how these numbers compare with national trends.

Many people may be surprised to hear the United States has some of the highest maternal mortality rates among high-income countries. In the May session of Hot Topics in Practice, the NWCPHP and the University of Washington Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health welcome Alexis Bates to discuss Washington State’s recent review of maternal deaths and how these numbers compare with national trends.

In this one-hour webinar, Bates will explain the history behind the 2016 law that formalized a maternal mortality review panel in Washington, noting the involvement of key stakeholders. She will also highlight specific clinical and social factors that contribute to pregnancy-related deaths, including which ages and groups are most affected, and review the panel’s recommendations for addressing these concerns.

Register today to learn why maternal deaths in the United States have risen since the 1980s, and what is being done both locally and nationally to address the issue.
