Understanding the factors that support public health staff to become more aware of, confident in, and committed to advancing health equity is a critical part of strengthening the public health workforce. This month’s Hot Topics in Practice succeeds PH WINS for the Future: Understanding the Strengths and Needs of Rural Public Health which aired January 2023.

The February session of Hot Topics in Practice will further discuss the findings from the 2021 Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS). This study explores important factors associated with addressing health equity among governmental public health staff. The presenters will discuss the implications of these findings as they relate to equipping these members of the workforce with the tools needed to advance health equity.

In this hour-long webinar, Paula Kett, PhD, MPH, RN, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Center for Health Workforce Studies, and Dany Zemmel, MPH, the Training and Engagement Manager at the Region V Public Health Training Center, will focus on the components of public health practice that are important for health equity competencies. They will also discuss recommendations to improve workforce development and training, such as explicit naming of the effects of structural racism, application of new concepts, and skill development. These skill areas include identifying, influencing, and implementing policies, community engagement, and cross-sector partnership building.

Register today to learn more about this study and the factors associated with advancing health equity competencies among public health staff.
