NWCPHP is excited to announce the release of an updated version of our Program Evaluation in Public Health course.
This self-paced training will guide practitioners through the basics of conducting program evaluations. We spoke with Kevin deVoss, an Instructional Designer at the Center, about the updates.
“This training has consistently been one of the most popular programs we offer, but it was developed almost twenty years ago and focused exclusively on environmental health professionals,” Kevin explained.
“As we made updates, we drew heavily on the newly updated 2024 Program Evaluation Framework from the CDC. This Framework addresses developments that have occurred since the original course was created."
The design team also decided to broaden the scope of the training and place evaluation in the context of the entire field of public health.
“As with all our work at the Center, we take a very human-centered design approach,” Kevin noted. “We start by focusing on the audience, which we envision being public health professionals who may not have a strong background in evaluation methods. We try to put ourselves in their shoes and focus on what’s practical for them.”
This approach is especially relevant when dealing with evaluation. “Every organization knows they need to be evaluating the effectiveness of their programs, but often the subject is presented in a way that makes it very intimidating and unapproachable,” Kevin noted. “In designing this update, we’ve tried to keep the materials clear, avoid jargon and ensure that the logic models we’ve developed are accessible.”
The updated Program Evaluation in Public Health course is a free, online, self-paced training that will take approximately 90 minutes to complete. Upon completion, learners will be prepared to effectively measure their organizations’ programs and successfully implement actionable findings. Learners who finish the training will receive a certificate of completion. For those pursuing Certified in Public Health (CPH) credentials, this training may be eligible for CE credits.
