Every year, the UW School of Public Health gives each of its five departments the opportunity to select one staff member for special recognition. These five staff are then honored at an awards ceremony hosted by the Dean of the UW School of Public Health.

The staff member selected by the Department of Health Services was Trudy San Jose White, Administrative Coordinator at NWCPHP. On June 11, 2010, she was presented with the Department of Health Services Outstanding Staff Award.

What positions have you held at the University of Washington?

I’ve been at NWCPHP for almost nine years. Before that, I worked at the UW Alumni Association for 13 years. I was also at the office of University Relations for one year.

You’ve had a long time then to think about what it is like to work at the UW. What can you say about working here?

Since I was born beautiful instead of rich, I’m happy to have a job here. It is a great place to work. The benefits are good, and I enjoy all the people I work with.

What is a favorite part of your job at NWCPHP?

I like seeing all the pieces of a project come together. With some projects, sometimes it seems like “Oh my God! It’s going to be too much to do!” But somehow it always gets done. I like it when something I’ve worked on, like the Summer Institute, is off and running. With the Institute, I love to see it happening, to see people happy and learning.

What do you like to do when you are not at work?

I like to go shopping, and I like to beat my son at Scrabble.

What is something you didn’t know about public health before you started working at NWCPHP?

Actually, before coming to NWCPHP, I didn’t realize what public health was. I think a lot of people still don’t know what public health is. Public health is involved in a lot of things that you don’t put the public health tag on.

Also, I don’t think people realize who public health is. Firefighters and police officers don’t have this problem. Maybe we need to get uniforms.
