Five targeted areas to increase its expertise and impact. Eight strategic initiatives to make for a stronger, more effective institution. These are the major elements of the ambitious new strategic plan for the University of Washington School of Public Health.

After six months of focus groups, outreach meetings, interviews, a web-based survey of nearly 800 respondents, and a two-day retreat, the draft plan was released for review. The School of Public Health is soliciting comments about the draft plan from students, faculty, staff, and the general public health community.

Dean Howard Frumkin remarked, "We’ll retain, and build on, the many strengths for which we are so well known: scientific rigor, methodological excellence, a commitment to applied public health, and a global perspective. Second, we’ve identified key public health challenges, in which our core activities—creating and sharing knowledge, preparing public health leaders, and applying knowledge—will enable us to make a difference."

Comments are welcome about the plan until mid-October, when comments will be reviewed and integrated into the planning process. The School of Public Health website outlines many ways in which you can share your feedback, whether through an in-person discussion, online, or via e-mail.

"The strategic plan is not yet done," Frumkin said. "Please…jump in, and offer your input. The Steering Committee takes very seriously each suggestion it receives."
