The University of Alaska Anchorage and a local organizing committee will host the 20th World Congress of Epidemiology during August 17–21, 2014. These triennial meetings represent the largest gathering of epidemiologists from around the world and provide an opportunity for researchers, teachers, and practitioners to discuss new directions and special issues related to the profession.

Betty Monsour, PhD, Associate Professor of Public Health at University of Alaska Anchorage, is a key conference planner. She notes, “This congress is the perfect opportunity for regional epidemiologists to present their work to a global audience and to participate in many workforce development workshops.”

The congress theme, “Global Epidemiology in a Changing Environment: the Circumpolar Perspective,” is a key concern of state and federal public health agencies in the United States and internationally.

Participants will have the opportunity to attend special symposia on infectious disease, autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders, mental health and civil conflicts, gun violence and violence prevention, vaccine development and implementation, and the eradication of polio.

There will also be five plenary sessions on: circumpolar health; climate change and health; the ethics of human rights, health disparities, and social justice; innovations in epidemiologic methods; and hot topics in epidemiology.

The planning committee is currently accepting abstracts for oral and poster presentations, prioritizing those that address the conference theme. The submission deadline is January 17, 2014. Authors will be notified starting March 3, 2014.
