Can Big Data lead us down a path toward healthier communities? The 2015 issue of Northwest Public Health explores the opportunities and challenges that Big Data presents for improving policies and practice in public health.

With data generation happening faster than it can often be analyzed, the resulting bottleneck effect can often slow the use of Big Data for public health.

“Big Data by itself won’t lead to better health,” said Northwest Public Health magazine Editor-in-Chief, Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett. “Big Data Will make a difference only if it leads to strong policies and practice, and smart investments in communities.”

Articles in this issue highlight the innovative approaches, exciting initiatives, and evidence-based research that are already underway by our regional partners in practice and academia. Spanning the micro to the macro, topics covered in this issue include: activity-tracking devices, data connectivity, electronic medical records, data mapping and visualizations, and genomic data.

Northwest Public Health is published with funding from the University of Washington School of Public Health. The issue is available online and in print formats; hard copies of the magazine can be requested by emailing nph@u.washington.edu

We also encourage you to send us your feedback via our online reader survey. Feedback submitted by July 31, 2015, will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of two $100 gift cards.
