Epidemiology: Basic provides an introduction to epidemiology for practitioners who have limited training and experience in the field, including those in public health nursing, environmental health, emergency preparedness, disease surveillance, program management and more. Learn about concepts, methods, and terminology with a focus on disease outbreak, community surveillance, and causal associations.

Objectives

  1. Describe the various steps in the investigation of a disease outbreak.
  2. State and compare the strengths and weaknesses of community surveillance.
  3. List and describe the criteria used to make causal associations.
  4. List 3-5 concepts in basic epidemiology that could influence responses to global climate change, new built environments, and communicable disease issues and describe the possible nature of those effects.
