In March 2009 the Red River in Fargo, North Dakota crested at record-breaking levels. In this one hour webinar, which is part of the Hot Topics series, Ruth Bachmeier, MS, RN, John R. Baird, MD, MPH, and Doug Murphy, MBA, BMS, from Fargo Cass Public Health share their local public health’s role in the major flood disaster. Presenters also explore how they collaborated with other private, public, local and state entities in planning and implementing the safe evacuation of vulnerable populations.

Presenters

Ruth Bachmeier, MS, RN, has worked in the field of Public Health for the past twenty years, with the past 13 at Fargo Cass Public Health. She began her career at Fargo Cass Public Health as a Public Health Nurse and became the Director of Nursing a short time later. She has been in the position of Director since 2008.

John R. Baird, MD, MPH, is Health Officer for Fargo Cass Public Health and also works for the North Dakota Department of Health as a field medical officer and chief of the special populations section. Previously, he was residency director of a family medicine program and is a clinical professor at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine. He was medical director of Family Healthcare Center, a federally funded community health center in Fargo, before which he was in private practice.

Doug Murphy, MBA, BMS, is a native of North Dakota and graduate of the University of Minnesota. He has been the owner and licensed funeral director of Price-Murphy Funeral Home for 15 years and has been in his current position at Fargo Cass Public Health for one year. Doug is involved in humanitarian projects building schools and clinics in rural Guatemala.
