The Program
Active Learning
This year, the Leadership Institute offers its participants an even more dynamic learning experience informed by feedback from past participants. Participants will grapple with real-world problems using problem-based learning (PBL). Experienced faculty will help participants to get the most out of their time in the Institute.

Time Commitment
This 12-month program is designed to meet your needs and develop your leadership skills using a combination of face-to-face instruction and distance learning.
Face-to-face
During the Institute, participants will attend three face-to-face sessions. Each session will last approximately 2–3 days and all participants will come together in Seattle, Washington at the following times:
- April 19–21, 2011
- August 8–10, 2011
- TBD March 2012
Distance learning
Distance-based technologies will be used throughout the year for virtual team meetings and/or sessions with subject matter experts and national leaders. Participants should anticipate spending 2–6 hours online each month.
An additional 4–8 hours each month will be needed to prepare for cases, journal club sessions, and other activities as they arise.
Cost
Scholarship funding is now available to subsidize Leadership Institute fees.
Recognizing the difficult budget issues that most state, local, and tribal health departments are facing in the current era, NWCPHP has been able to identify funds to help subsidize participation in this year's Leadership Institute. We believe that creative leadership is especially important as health departments reconsider and redesign fundamental systems and services.
We are now able to offer a substantial subsidy of $1,200 to Institute applicants. When completing the application for the Institute, simply indicate that you are requesting the $1,200 scholarship at the top of your narrative statement. This will reduce your cost for the Institute from $3,000 to $1,800.
The cost covers faculty, facilities, access to distance learning technologies, as well as most meals during the on-site sessions. Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses to and from the on-site sessions as well as the costs associated with materials, books, boarding, and the distance learning activities (e.g., long distance phone charges, Internet access fees).
