Public Health Accreditation
Intended Audience
These trainings are appropriate for all public health workers in state, local or tribal health agencies, hospitals, community health clinics, and community-based organizations seeking a basic understanding of public health accreditation principles, applications, and processes.
Training Descriptions
Many health departments and public health professionals are currently involved with the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) or its national voluntary accreditation process. NWCPHP offers in-person training about accreditation, related to quality improvement and to the national accreditation process. NWCPHP accreditation courses include information about the evolution of accreditation, organizational strategic plans, community health assessments, community improvement plans, and quality improvement techniques (such as process and outcome evaluation, data interpretation, and program planning for next steps).
Objectives
These trainings allow participants to:
- Describe the evolution and context of accreditation
- Discuss the role of accreditation in public health
- Investigate organizational strategic plans, community health assessments, and community improvement plans
- Implement quality improvement strategies
- Identify techniques for rapid testing of quality improvement plans
- Present and interpret public health data
- Describe pre-PHAB application protocol
- Review PHAB application and accreditation processes
Prerequisite Knowledge
None
Format
Training is offered in discussion format and uses case studies to provide accreditation situations typically encountered in practice. Participants are encouraged to submit issues from their own work experience and/or PHAB findings specific to their or other public health organizations.
Estimated Time to Complete
The training can be provided in a variety of formats to meet the needs and timeframe of the intended audience.

Mr. Thompson frequently recruits local, regional, or national specialists to be co-instructors for these trainings. This has been a successful format for integrating current local issues with key training concepts.
