Local Options for Healthy Living: Chronic Disease and Cost Consequences

Do you need new ideas for addressing chronic disease in your community? If so, this online, interactive session is for you. The presenters will discuss simulation models that can help shape local strategic planning for chronic disease. They will share the insights and conclusions from their national chronic disease system dynamics (SD) model. They will also contrast disease and cost outcomes from the national model with that of a locally oriented version in East Travis County in Austin, Texas.

Presenters
Diane Orenstein, PhD, is a behavior scientist in the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, Centers for Disease Control. The focus of her programmatic and applied research is to conduct economic evaluations that describe the cost burden of chronic diseases, cost effectiveness of interventions, and to develop tools and system models for public health practitioners and other key stakeholders that provide guidance for policies and prevention.
Justin Trogdon, PhD, is a health economist in RTI International’s Public Health Economics Program. His current research agenda includes methods for estimating the cost of disease with applications in obesity, chronic disease, cancer, and tobacco; program evaluation and cost-effectiveness studies; treatment for heart attack, focusing on the role of hospital experience; and the impact of social networks on obesity.
Kristina Wile, MS, has been providing consulting and facilitation for systems thinking and system dynamics for 15 years. For the past few years, she has been working with the CDC and other partners to develop a model to understand the dynamics of cardiovascular disease and its risk factors in local contexts.

- Compare and contrast effectiveness of potential intervention options
