Putting Preparedness into Context
Description
What are the most pressing issues facing public health today? Where should we spend our dwindling resources? How should the new administration prioritize public health challenges? Should we continue to allocate resources for preparedness? This session will explore the importance of preparedness and how to integrate it with the top priorities identified by Hot Topics participants and public health leadership.

Presenters
John R. (Jack) Thompson, MSW, is a senior lecturer with the Department of Health Services in the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine. He has been a member of the faculty since 1994. From 1999-2008, Mr. Thompson served as the director of the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice. He was also a faculty associate with the Health Policy Analysis Program. Prior to his UW appointment, Mr. Thompson was employed by the Seattle-King County Department of Public Health for ten years, and was the director of the Seattle Health Services Division. Before his work at the health department, he served as Executive Director of Neighborhood Health Centers of Seattle, a consortium of community health centers, for six years.
Paul Wiesner, MD, completed his medical training at the University of Wisconsin and his internal medicine / infectious disease training at the University of Rochester and University of Washington. During a 20-year career with the Centers for Disease Control, he directed national programs on STD Control, Chronic Disease and Public Health Training. He has served on CDC’s Preventive Medicine Advisory Council, the National Research Council's Panel on Performance Measures and Data, the Coordinating Council of the National Coalition for Healthier Cities and Communities the Board of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). He chaired the Council of the Public Health Leadership Society and the NACCHO workgroup that developed MAPP. He was the 2003 president of the Georgia Public Health Association and the Director of the DeKalb County Board of Health from 1989 to 2004. He is currently the leader of the Hot Topics Forum at the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice at the University of Washington. He is the author of more than 70 articles in scientific journals. In his spare time he volunteers in the community on housing, transportation and neighborhood sustainability.
