How Wise Are You? The National Library of Medicine's Preparedness and Response Resources

Maryanne Blake and Gail Kouame, librarians with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region will share a sampler of quality information resources relevant to the disaster planning and response workforce. From the Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER), to MedlinePlus, a consumer health portal site, the National Library of Medicine has a wealth of free information resources you can use!

Presenters

As outreach/evaluation coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR) Maryanne Blake, MLS gives presentations, demonstrations, classes and workshops on the use of the Internet and National Library of Medicine resources. She has been with the Regional Medical Library (RML) for twelve years. Prior to coming to the NN/LM PNR Ms. Blake was a hospital librarian at the VA Medical Center and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, and clinical librarian at George Washington University Medical School and Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, DC.

Gail Kouame, MLS is the consumer health coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM), Pacific Northwest Region and has been with the NN/LM for five years. Ms. Kouame’s focus is specifically on facilitating delivery of quality health information to the public through collaboration with: academic, hospital, and community libraries; health agencies and organizations; as well as community organizations, health advocacy groups, health ministries, and other mechanisms. Prior to becoming a librarian, she was a social worker in the healthcare field for 15 years, working with elderly clients and their families.

Learner Objectives

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • List at least three National Library of Medicine information resources relevant to the disaster planning and response workforce
  • Identify the National Network of Libraries of Medicine as a source for training on information and referral to local medical libraries
  • Recognize libraries and community librarians as potential partners in preparedness and response planning

Target Audience

This session would be appropriate for the following audiences:

  • Local and state public health practitioners
  • Local and state emergency management staff
