Environmental Health Assessment for China's 2008 Summer Olympics

In November, 2005, Carl Osaki traveled to Beijing, China at the request of Chinese health officials to provide information about how the US conducts environmental health assessments. Officials intended to use the information to assess environmental issues relating to the 2008 Summer Olympics. Carl will relate his experiences through pictures and discuss some of the differences between the American and Chinese approaches to environmental health assessment.

Presenter

Carl S. Osaki, RS, MSPH is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of Washington. He is also an affiliated faculty member at the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice. He retired as the director of environmental health, Seattle-King County Department of Public Health in 1999 and was the vice chair of the Washington State Board of Health from 1997 to 2005. He is a consultant to local, state, and tribal public health agencies nationwide and has provided numerous trainings and workshops relating to environmental health practice and public health emergency preparedness. From 2000 to 2007, he managed two CDC training grants relating to environmental health practice. Carl is the past chair of the Washington State Association of Local Health Officials. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Environmental Health from the University of Washington. He has worked in public health practice since 1966.

Learner Objectives

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Describe the process used by a foreign nation (China) in conducting community environmental health assessments

  • Summarize the environmental and community issues associated with a major international sporting event
  • Describe the challenges associated with the development of standards and criteria for measuring environmental impacts associated with the 2008 Summer Olympics
