James Mack will discuss the complexities of food defense generally, the structure of food defense emergency response in Oregon, and provide an overview of the development of the Oregon Public Health Food Defense Emergency Response Plan.

Presenter

James C. Mack, MPA, BS, is a Foodborne Disease Outbreak Investigator and Environmental Health Specialist Network Site Coordinator (EHS-Net) for the State of Oregon. He graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health. Shortly after graduation, James obtained a Masters of Public Administration degree from the University of Illinois-Springfield. James joined the State of Oregon, Public Health Division in 1998 as a Food Program Specialist. In 2000, James was given the opportunity to lead the Oregon Environmental Health Specialist Network Centers for Disease Control & Prevention Project, researching systems approaches to environmental antecedents of foodborne disease outbreaks. During his tenure at the Oregon Public Health Division, James also held the position of Food Defense & Environmental Health Emergency Preparedness Specialist. In that position, James was responsible for developing, exercising, and revising the Oregon Public Health Food Defense Emergency Response Plan. In February 2007, James completed a year long CDC sponsored Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute Fellowship.

Learner Objectives

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Describe the complex nature of public health food defense emergency response.
  • Describe the diverse roles, responsibilities, and lines of communication at the local, state, federal, industry and private firms during a food defense emergency response.
  • Access online resources to aid in the improvement or development of public health food defense emergency response plans.
  • Develop food defense plans similar to the State of Oregon Public Health Food Defense Emergency Response Plan.

  • Emergency managers
  • Local and state first responders and receivers
  • Food industry and private sector emergency response personnel
