A Practical Tool for Business Continuity During a Flu Pandemic

Description

During this online, interactive session, Dr. Uwe Reischl and Dr. Newell Gough will discuss a business continuity management tool they developed with input from the health department and local businesses. The new tool allows management to estimate the potential impact of an avian influenza pandemic on an organization’s ability to continue business operations. Key steps in the use of this new tool will be presented.

Presenter

Uwe Reischl, PhD, MD, is a professor of health sciences at Boise State University. Dr. Reischl is a public health physician with specialization in occupational health and disaster preparedness planning. He received his undergraduate and graduate training at the University of California at Berkeley where he obtained the Ph.D. degree in Environmental Health Sciences from the School of Public Health. He received his medical training at the University of Ulm in Germany where he obtained his MD- PhD degrees. Dr. Reischl served as a science advisor to the global advisory committee on health research of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Newell Gough, PhD, MBA, is a professor of management at Boise State University. Dr. Gough received his PhD degree from the University of Utah and his MBA degree from the University of Montana. Dr. Gough specializes in the evaluation of intellectual property management, technology transfer, corporate entrepreneurship, and strategic management. In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Gough is a management consultant to high-growth technology companies in the Pacific Northwest. Prior to joining Boise State University, Dr. Gough held various management positions in an innovative retail business.

  • Identify primary uses of the tool in pandemic preparedness planning
  • Visualize the specific impacts of high absenteeism on an organization
  • Articulate the importance of mitigating the impact of pandemic flu through cross training
