Starbucks Business Continuity Planning: Hurricane Katrina and Pandemic Influenza

Wednesday, October 25, 2006; 12:00–1:00 pm (PST)

Description

This online, interactive session will feature a two-part presentation about Starbucks' business continuity plans, starting with a summary of Starbucks preparations in the Gulf Coast prior to the arrival of Hurricane Katrina, including the response immediately following the incident. The second part of the presentation will outline Starbucks pandemic influenza planning to date and how lessons from previous incidents are incorporated into these plans.

The speaker will describe how multiple scenario incidents almost always necessitate improvisation, but despite event-specific response decisions the recovery goals should not change much. The differences in how business can rely on previously developed tactics and steps for recovery during the initial versus later phases of the response will also be discussed. Finally, the speaker will comment on how private businesses should be prepared to provide for the safety and well being of employees without the basic support of first responders for the first 3 to 7 days of a major disaster.
