Epidemiology Competencies

This section contains epidemiology competencies for public health workers. The competencies were developed by the NWCPHP faculty. You can download the entire set or click on each competency to view a list of subcompetencies and objectives.

Competency 1: Describe the role of epidemiology in public health

Competency 2: Design and conduct an outbreak investigation

Competency 3: Define terms and concepts associated with infectious disease

Competency 4: Define, describe, interpret, and install public health surveillance systems

Competency 5: Obtain, evaluate, and interpret public health information

Competency 6: Organize, prepare and display epidemiologic data

Competency 7: Evaluate the efficacy or effectiveness of a screening program

Competency 8: Design and implement surveys and questionnaires

Competency 9: Design and conduct program evaluations
