Built Environment and Energy Balance Behaviors (and Hopefully Change Therein)
The spaces in which we live greatly impact our health, whether it's the availability of sidewalks for people to walk or green space dedicated to farmer's markets for fresh fruits and vegetables. Analyzing the relationship between the built environment and the health of communities is the subject of the Seattle Healthy Places Research Group.
Seattle Healthy Places is hosted by the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice (NWCPHP) and the Department of Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington. This group meets once per month for a presentation and discussion and welcomes anyone interested in exploring the many facets of health and the built environment.
Seattle Healthy Places will meet on May 13, 2010 at 3:30 at the University of Washington Seattle campus. This month's speaker is Brian E. Saelens, PhD.
This month's presentation is entitled "Built Environment and Energy Balance Behaviors (and Hopefully Change Therein)." Dr. Saelens conducts research in environmental influences on physical activity and eating and on the psychosocial factors that influence individual choice for weight-related behaviors.
Dr. Saelens is a health psychologist and Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry and Behavorial Sciences at Seattle Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center.
Seattle Healthy Places will meet in the University of Washington Gould Hall, room 110. It's located at 3949 15th Ave NE. (Click here for a map)
