The Northwest Center for Public Health Practice and the Department of Urban Design and Planning invite you to attend the monthly meeting of the Seattle Healthy Places Research Group (HPRG). This group welcomes public health and planning faculty, researchers, students, practitioners, and others interested in exploring the relationship between the built environment and the health of communities.

Carol Maclennan from the Tri-County Health Department in Colorado will be presenting “Integrating public health into local land use decisions: a practitioner’s experience.”

Carol Maclennan is the Senior Environmental Health Policy Coordinator for Tri-County Health Department (TCHD), which serves 30 jurisdictions in metropolitan Denver. TCHD is a recognized leader in protecting and promoting public health through the local planning process. Since 1999 Carol has been the Program Lead for the agency’s Land Use Program.

Using case histories of individual projects and master planning efforts, she will discuss the process, tools and data TCHD uses in community level land use interventions. She will also address the day to day challenges and opportunities of working in the local planning world, and offer suggestions for building capacity to routinely create healthy places.

Carol’s background is in psychology, social work and intergovernmental relations. She has worked in federal, state and local government, is a former member of the Colorado Board of Health, and was the Environmental Coordinator for the City of Aurora, a large municipality in Metro Denver.
