Do you ever wonder who oversees outbreak investigations, like the one recently associated with contaminated cantaloupes? Have you thought about whose job it is to set immunization policies in your state?

Wendy E. Braund, MD, MPH, MSEd will assume these responsibilities as she begins her position as Wyoming State Health Officer on October 10, 2011. As State Health Officer, her duties may include establishing quarantines and closing public spaces for health reasons, overseeing the Wyoming Office of Emergency Services, and managing the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program. Braund will also serve as Senior Administrator of Wyoming's new Public Health Division.

Braund says there will be great opportunities associated with both positions to advance public health for the benefit of Wyoming's citizens. "With the new Public Health Division, we’ll be bringing together the various state public health programs and personnel under one umbrella to make our efforts to serve the state even more successful."

Braund comes to Wyoming from the US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) where she was the Chief of the Public Health Branch in the Division of Public Health and Interdisciplinary Education, Bureau of Health Professions. NWCPHP Assistant Director, Luann D'Ambrosio, commented, "Wendy used to be NWCPHP's contact for our Public Health Training Center grant, funded by HRSA. We enjoyed working with her in this capacity, and now we look forward to collaborating with her as a health officer in the region."

Braund is replacing Brent Sherard MD, MPH, who left the office in April to serve as Health Policy Advisor for Governor Matt Mead. Wyoming State Epidemiologist, Tracy Murphy MD, has been serving as Acting Health Officer in the interim.
