UW School of Public Health Celebrates National Public Health Week

Students in the University of Washington School of Public Health celebrate National Public Health week, April 1–7, 2013.

Students in the University of Washington (UW) School of Public Health celebrate National Public Health week, April 1–7, 2013.

April 1–7 is National Public Health Week, and the Student Public Health Association (SPHA) in the UW School of Public Health has planned several events to increase awareness on campus about what public health is and why it is important. Organizers hope these events will bring students together from across the various departments in the School.

Kristen Savage, Vice-President of SPHA talks about her motivation to promote public health: “In many ways, public health is the crux of everything else. I am passionate about health because I think it is a basic human right, one that many are denied because of their socio-economic status, nationality, race, gender, or neighborhood.”

The events planned include a screening of Escape Fire, a film about the skyrocketing costs of health care in the United States, and a Master of Public Health practicum reception. On Saturday, April 6, students can participate in a service day with either the Rainier Valley Food Bank, EarthCorps, or Operation Sack Lunch.

Susana Tat, President of SPHA says, “Sometimes my public health friends and I joke around and ask ourselves, ‘We just want to save the world. Is that so hard?’ We recognize that public health is a collective effort, and that is why it is important for us to find our people and feel connected to others who are also passionate about public health. We hope that our SPHA events during public health week will bring people together to develop a sense of community within the School of Public Health.”
