IOM Crisis Standards of CareThe Institute of Medicine has released the report Crisis Standards of Care: Summary of a Workshop Series. This series of workshops was held throughout the country from March through May of 2009.

NWCPHP director Dr. Susan Allan was one of five panelists at the "Crisis Standards of Care" workshop held by the Institute of Medicine in Irvine, California in March of 2009.

The workshop enabled local, state, and regional officials to discuss efforts to establish standards of care, implementation strategies, and how protocols are advanced to become operational entities. Discussion also ensued about current opportunities and barriers to improving care.

The potential danger of a wide-spread public health emergency or disaster spurred this workshop series, which aimed to look at preparedness. The workshops were intended to "foster dialogue among a broad range of stakeholders - practitioners, policy makers, community members, academics, and others - and to provide ongoing opportunities to confront issues of mutual interest and concern."

The report is available on the Institute of Medicine's Web site or at the National Academies Press.
