On March 22, 2014, a mudslide swept over the rural community of Oso, Washington, injuring 17 people and killing 42. Due to the large volume of debris, the event quickly turned from a rescue mission to one of recovery, with responders managing mass fatalities and concerns about possible hazardous materials.

In the October session of Hot Topics in Practice, Gary Goldbaum, MD, MPH, shares how his health district worked with county, state, and federal partners to respond to the event. In the one-hour presentation, he will discuss specific public health actions such as activating the coordinating center, working with volunteers, and assessing environmental health concerns. Goldbaum will also discuss how the health district addressed medical and mental health issues, public messaging, and worker safety.
