Summer Institute for Public Health Practice

August 4–7, 2014
A three-and-a-half day, hands-on training to strengthen core public health skills.

The 2014 Summer Institute will feature popular courses from past years, along with three new course offerings:

  • Achieving Racial Equity in Public Health helps participants use a structural lens in their efforts to create racial equity in public health.
  • Leadership in Changing Times gives curious scholars a taste of the longer Northwest Public Health Leadership Institute, which will begin enrollment in 2015.
  • Medical Coding: Introducing ICD-10-CM introduces the International Classification of Diseases Coding System (ICD-10-CM) required under HIPAA beginning October 1, 2014. This course has two separate tracks and separate group and individual rates.

Public Health Management Certificate

August 2014 – July 2015
A yearlong, in-person and online program to build skills to manage people, money, and information.

Last year, NWCPHP held a special edition of the Management Certificate in Montana. The program, which was recently named a model practice by the Health Resources and Services Administration and the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health, is headed back to Seattle for the 2014–15 cohort year.

"We aim to make the program accessible and also relevant and applicable to today's public health workforce needs by using distance-based learning," explains Janell Blackmer, Public Health Management Certificate Program Coordinator. "We've developed a curriculum that covers management competencies selected from core competencies by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice."
