NWCPHP is pleased to welcome Joana Cunha-Cruz as the new Associate Director for Strategic Partnerships. In her new role, Cunha-Cruz will wear a variety of hats, some of which include building and maintaining collaborative partnerships among key stakeholders at the local, regional, and national level, generating opportunities to help advance prevention systems in the region, leading and writing grants, and providing oversight to other center-wide activities.

“NWCPHP has a strong long-standing reputation with the practice community throughout the Northwest region,” said Cunha-Cruz. “The collegial and collaborative environment at NWCPHP and the work that transpires is deeply inspiring to me. I hope to continue this momentum by fostering new and existing practice-based research activities and partnerships.”

Cunha-Cruz came to NWCPHP from the University of Washington’s School of Dentistry where she is also an active Research Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Health Sciences. Additionally, she holds an Adjunct Research Associate Professor position in the School of Public Health’s Department of Health Services. As a dentist and epidemiologist focused on disparities in health and health care, Cunha-Cruz brings a wealth of knowledge in working with evidence-based methods, community-based research, and quality improvement projects.

“It has always been important to me to understand the needs of partners and organizations so that we can produce and return meaningful evidence-based research, trainings, and evaluation services back to community,” she said.

Cunha-Cruz earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the State University of Pernambuco, and holds a Master and PhD degree in Public Health – Epidemiology from the State University of Rio de Janeiro. She lives in Seattle with her husband and two children. They enjoy cooking, traveling to sunny places, and photography.
