NWCPHP is pleased to learn that Joe Finkbonner, Executive Director of Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board, is a new appointee to the Public Health Accreditation Board. Finkbonner was appointed to a three-year team and will assist the Board in its role as the national accrediting body for public health departments in the United States.

The Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB) is a valued partner to NWCPHP’s research, training, and evaluation efforts. Before becoming its Executive Director, Finkbonner was the Director of the NPAIHB's Northwest Tribal Epidemiology Center (The EpiCenter).

Finkbonner began his work in Indian health for the Lummi Tribe as the tribe’s Health Director/CEO. In this role, he was active at state and federal levels in his efforts to heighten the awareness of disparities of American Indian/Alaskan Native populations and worked to improve the health status of tribal communities through policy development—an effort he continues to the present day.

Commenting on his new role, Finkbonner said, “I am excited about the appointment to the PHAB and look forward to providing a perspective on tribal public health systems as they relate to the context of public health.”
