Janell Blackmer's handmade cards

Janell Blackmer, NWCPHP's Manager for Center Operations, is known to her co-workers as the woman in charge of the money and the woman who makes the birthday cards.

Janell has been at NWCPHP since 2001. She handles fiscal operations, grant management activities, and administrative matters. She also assists with personnel issues and oversees NWCPHP's brand new Public Health Management Certificate. Needless to say, Janell is a master of multi-tasking.

It's this multi-tasking that allows her to squeeze in card-making while working full-time and spending time with her husband, her four-year-old son Wesley, and her two-year-old daughter Rebekah. Not only does Janell make birthday cards for the staff and faculty, she also makes thank you, get well, thinking of you, congratulations, and special request cards.

Although her husband doesn't always appreciate Janell's cards taking over the dining room table, it gives her time to connect with fellow hobbyists, and it gives her a sense of satisfaction to make something for other people. That joy is evident in her creative designs.

Janell began making cards in 1999, but it was two years ago that she became a hobby demonstrator for the supply company, Stampin' Up. As a fiscal manager, she realized her card hobby was over budget. Now she does about four in-home demonstrations each year in return for a helpful discount on card supplies. She has also been bringing in a bit of revenue by selling the cards at bazaars throughout the area.
