Public health practitioners from around the Northwest region gathered during the first week of August to attend one of three NWCPHP trainings—the Summer Institute, Leadership Institute, or Management Certificate. Scholars learned critical skills in their respective program tracks, and connected with colleagues and leaders from around the region during a networking lunch and plenary session.

To kick off the week, the three cohorts came together for a plenary session about how health systems in Washington State are changing to address the social drivers of health. Scholars heard from key leaders on how new Accountable Communities of Health are transforming prevention systems through multi-sector stakeholder groups.

“It was impressive to see such energy among these scholars and leaders examining why and how to fold in efforts to address social determinants of health into their daily work. It says a lot about the future for improving health and addressing inequities,” said NWCPHP Director, Betty Bekemeier, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN.

During the two-and-a-half-day Summer Institute, scholars attended courses on effective program planning and evaluation or on the root causes of health equity. The “Examining Root Causes of Health Equity” course gave participants a chance to analyze how multiple social factors influence health and how to engage others in these complex issues.

As part of their second onsite session, Leadership Institute scholars had the opportunity to hear from distinguished speakers on health equity, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), data use, and communicating with elected officials, in addition to working on their second problem-based learning case. Health equity panelists discussed their own personal and professional experiences with health equity, covering a range of topic areas including race, health literacy, and maternal and child health.

Management Certificate participants were also in attendance during the week as part of their program’s kick-off session. Scholars took a range of classes including Team Leadership, Quality Improvement, Project Management, and Organizational Systems.
