Spirituality can be experienced many ways—through organized religion, cultural rituals, a connection to nature, or gathering with others in clubs or barbershops. In addition to personal fulfillment, these practices connect us to public communities, a key asset in creating and maintaining health.

In the September Hot Topics, Gary Gunderson, Vice President for Faith and Health at Wake Forest University Baptist Health and Professor of Public Health Science at Wake Forest University, explains how this sense of connectedness helps create community health, improves access to clinical services, fosters recovery, and is a critical influence on the future of public health practice.

Gunderson will discuss how public health and faith-based leaders can employ science and community connections to improve health for future generations. Central to this national movement is better integration of hospitals and social service providers within their surrounding communities. Gunderson will provide real-world examples and challenging ideas for how public health and faith communities can contribute to this integration.

Public health and faith communities share a long history and have a common goal: happy, healthy people. Register today to learn how our common concern for prevention and a holistic view of wellness can be harnessed to improve health.

This session also marks the 100th episode of Hot Topics. Paul Wiesner, the initial host of the series will return to moderate the session and briefly reflect on the series' history.
