Working to Improve Health by Improving Policy

The current financial crisis is cutting into public health services across the country. Decisions are being made to eliminate or reduce funding for programs, but the decision-makers often have little or no information available about what these cuts will mean to the community. It’s a common problem. That’s why Dr. Betty Bekemeier is excited to develop and evaluate evidence that can be used to inform policy-makers’ decisions.

Dr. Bekemeier, PhD, MPH, RN, was one of 12 nurse educators in the nation to be named a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar. Dr. Bekemeier will receive $350,000 to document how these cuts to public health services will affect vulnerable populations in multiple states and how this evidence can best inform policy.

“The support I receive will give me the time and mentoring that I need to study how public health professionals can work together to get evidence into the hands of policy-makers before—rather than after—they make key public health decisions,” said Dr. Bekemeier.

One crucial aspect of Dr. Bekemeier’s study will be working with practice-based research networks. These are networks that have been working at the state level to accumulate evidence-based information about public health systems and services.

“My research will help determine whether public health practice-based research networks are able to provide decision-makers with timely, evidence-based information about public health practices and whether that information leads to policies that are more beneficial for the most vulnerable in society.”

Dr. Bekemeier is a faculty member at NWCPHP. Her research studies how local and state public health systems may improve population health and eliminate disparities.
