August in Seattle means sun and fun. It’s also the time of year when public health scholars from around the region gather at the annual Summer Institute for Public Health Practice. In addition to hands-on course work, participants look forward to engaging plenary sessions where they can interact with leaders and colleagues from around the Northwest.

To align with the Summer Institute’s “health equity” theme, this year's presentations will explore how data, community partnerships, and leadership can support everyone's right to live a healthy life.

During Monday’s opening session, Bill Daniell, MD, MPH, will speak about leading a health impact assessment of the proposed cleanup plan for the Duwamish Superfund site. He will discuss how issues of community engagement and health equity were addressed during the process.

On Tuesday, Ali Rowhani-Rahbar, MD, MPH, PhD, will present data on violence and injury prevention issues and discuss the strategies used to address them.

Wednesday marks the Public Health Leaders Forum, hosted by Jeff Harris, MD, MPH, MBA. Panel members will speak about exciting new partnerships, prompted by health care reform, to improve community health and equity. Panelists include: Patty Hayes, RN, MN, Public Health - Seattle & King County; Dorothy Teeter, MHA, Washington State Health Care Authority; and John Wiesman, DrPH, MPH, Washington State Secretary of Health.

A complimentary networking reception to mark NWCPHP’s 25th anniversary immediately follows the leadership panel. More information about the reception will be available soon.

Join NWCPHP and our community partners for three focused conversations on data and strategies for creating health equity. For more information on attending these events, contact Barbara Rose, Summer Institute Coordinator. Download the entire 2015 Institute schedule.

It’s not too late to attend the entire three-and-a-half day Summer Institute for hands-on training. Learn more or register.
