Public health and law are often approached as distinctly separate domains. But NWCPHP Director Susan Allan, who holds degrees in both fields, as well as in medicine, knows they intersect in important ways. She knows that laws and regulations can have a great impact on the health of the public, and that many of the greatest public health achievements used the law as an important public health tool. She will be sharing her unique experience and perspective at two different events later this week at Arizona State University (ASU).

On October 5, ASU's Health Law Society is sponsoring an opportunity for students and fellows to learn more about public health law and about Allan's diverse career at a "cafe conversation" on campus in Tempe, Arizona. Allan will discuss her experiences in public health practice, including her work at NWCPHP and positions as State Public Health Director in Oregon and Health Director for Arlington County, Virginia. To encourage an intimate and engaging exchange, space for the event is limited to 15 persons.

Allan will also be among several leading public health law experts presenting at the Western Region Public Health Law Conference on October 6. Her talk will address practical law for public health professionals. This event follows the recent release of NWCPHP's new online training module, Practical Law for Public Health Officials.
